Breakwater extends shutdown

The metallurgy of the Caribou mine in New Brunswick’s Bathurst camp is proving to be an ongoing challenge for operator Breakwater Resources (BWR-T), which has decided to extend its temporary shutdown there “for an indefinite period of time.”

The company says metallurgical results to date, though steadily improving, have not reached desired levels. As a consequence of this and of weak base-metal markets, the temporary shutdown that began in early August will be extended.

Before the maintenance and vacation shutdown, zinc recovery averaged 72.5% in the last eight days of operation, while lead recovery averaged 65.4%. Despite these improvements, Breakwater says the mine re-opening “must be supported by detailed technical and economic studies at prevailing prices.” Some additional pilot-plant test work is planned for later this month, as well as other metallurgical tests.
