The book explains mining to people who may have had no schooling in the subject: investors, stock brokers, prospective students of geology and mining, and new employees in the mining industry.
The first edition was a handbook called Geology for the Layman, by Alexander MacLean, a former professor in the Department of Geology at the University of Toronto. It explained the technicalities of geology with the aid of some simple illustrations. Familiarity with the basics of geology, MacLean argued, would help the layman make sound decisions in buying and selling mining stocks.
Today, mining is a more complex business. Environmental regulations proliferate, exploration financing alternatives abound, computers are having a dramatic impact on all aspects of the business, and metal markets have become more international. Keeping on top of all these developments is a major challenge, even for professionals in the industry.
“For Mining Explained, we tapped into a pool of expertise by asking 17 mining industry professionals to contribute to each of the chapters,” says the book’s editor Patrick Whiteway. “We have also gone to a larger (8 1/2×11-inch) page format to enhance the presentation of information.
“The result is, we believe, the most comprehensive and up-to-date description of Canadian mining available,” adds Whiteway. “We’ve even done some crystal- ball gazing in a chapter that speculates on what the future holds for mining.”
Says Publisher John Cooke: “The increasing complexity in finding, mining and marketing today’s metals increases the need for a publication that explains how it all works. Mining Explained, we believe, will serve that need.”
