Books in Review: Mining Association issues “Facts” book

MINING IN CANADA, Facts and Figures, published by the Mining Association of Canada, Suite 809, 350 Sparks St, Ottawa, Ont. K1R7S8

This year’s Facts and Figures booklet from the Association has changed considerably in format, but remains an excellent reference source for its wealth of statistics on the mining industry in this country.

For some years now the annually- produced booklet has come out as a magazine-sized (about 9×11-in) publication, and has contained a good deal of general information, as well as statistical data, on such matters as exploration, environmental control, taxation, mining employment and research and development.

The new 1986 “Facts” book, however, has been reduced to a pocket- sized publication, (about 4×9-in), with only a brief general summary, but with a somewhat-expanded series of statistical tables.

Added to last year’s data, for instance, are tables showing Canada’s ranking among world producers in a number of important metals including uranium, zinc, nickel, gold, silver, copper, uranium and lead, and another providing a statistical survey on crude and fabricated minerals loaded at Canadian ports in international shipping trade.

Retained, as a centrepiece, is a map showing the principal mining areas of Canada.

Even in its truncated form, MAC’s new Facts book is still a valuable statistical source. In fact, the new and handier format may be a decided plus in terms of convenience and easier access.
