The fifth edition lists more than 6,500 field-trip guidebooks entered under some 780 organizations holding the meetings or conferences where those guidebooks appeared.
Many field-trip guidebooks are not announced in publishers’ lists even though guidebooks can be significant sources of local geology information. Some geology libraries spend considerable time locating and acquiring guidebooks. Sometimes inter-library borrowing of a guidebook may be the only way for someone to obtain a copy. This Union list catalogs field-trip guidebooks and reveals which libraries have copies.
The guidebooks in the 223-page volume are for field trips from as far back as the 1891 International Congress through the end of 1985. The lending policies of the 218 libraries in Canada and the U.S. that contributed to this edition are also provided.
Each record in the main part of the Union List consists of an organization that holds meetings or conferences, under which the guidebooks issued at these meetings are arranged chronologically, followed by a list of libraries holding these guidebooks.
The list is available, for $60, from Customer Service, American Geological Institute, 4220 King St., Alexandria, Va. 22302.
