The Base Metal Industry of the Republic of Kazakhstan, by Brook Hunt & Associates Ltd., Old Bank House, 11 London Street, Chertsey, Surrey KT16 8AP, U.K. 8,500.
The Republic of Kazakh-stan, part of the CIS, has become an important participant in the international trade in metals, says the report which provides a breakdown — by mine, smelter and refinery — of the production capability of this newly independent country.
The dissolution of the former Soviet Union and the subsequent declaration of independence by numerous republics which had previously been bound into a centrally planned, economic unit has caused numerous problems. As the report points out, the mining and metallurgical industries have been profoundly affected by the breaking of long-established links, set by the central planners of Moscow. Following independence, the mining and metallurgical industry in Kazakhastan has had to re-orient itself. In putting together the report, Brook’s aim was to assess the current state of the country’s industry, to collect technical, production and ore reserve data, and to establish the potential and priorities for future development of both existing operations and new projects.
