BOOK REVIEW — Book explores world diamond market

Three prominent international mining writers have produced New Frontiers in Diamonds, a book that analyzes the world diamond industry and the dramatic changes expected to take place in the next century.

The co-authors are: Timothy Green, author of The World of Gold and chief consultant to Gold Fields Minerals Services; Canadian journalist David Duval, former western editor of The Northern Miner; and Australian journalist Ross Louthean, publisher of Gold Mining Journal and Paydirt.

The book covers Canadian discoveries in considerable detail and includes a summary of geologist Charles Fipke’s 10-year odyssey of tracing diamond indicator minerals back to their source at the Lac de Gras kimberlite cluster. It also provides insight into how Canada’s diamond output is expected to affect international sales.

African production is analyzed as well — in particular, recent discoveries made off the coast of Namibia.

Australia’s role as a diamond producer is investigated, along with details of exploration efforts aimed at replacing limited reserves at the Argyle mine.

Russia’s diamond-mining past is discussed in detail, as is the country’s diamond stockpile and its ambivalent relationship with De Beers’ Central Selling Organization.

The book concludes with a look at the expected overall demand for diamonds in the next century and predicts who the major players will be in this volatile market.

Copies of New Frontiers in Diamonds are available for $65 each (including postage and taxes) from Duval Minecom, 416-470 Granville St., Vancouver, B.C.
