The Primary Copper Industry of Arizona in 1988 details production, stripping ratios, ore grade, mill recoveries, reserves, employment and wages and other statistics. Also included in this annual report are some national and world statistics for comparison. Each producer’s facilities and activities are briefly reviewed. Though Kennecott, Duval and Noranda withdrew from the Arizona copper industry before 1987, their operations continued under new ownership. Phelps Dodge, Magma, Asarco, Cyprus and Inspiration remained in 1988. Inspiration, a major contributor to Arizona’s economy for the past eight decades, sold all its Arizona copper interests to Cyprus at mid-year.
The companies produced 942,112 tons of copper in Arizona from ore with a weighted average grade of 0.60% copper. This represents an estimated 83% utilization of production capacity and is 59.5% of the total production of the U.S.
