To bolster confidence in its mineral resources sector, the Bolivian government is re-establishing its mines ministry as an independent body in government and giving the mines minister full status in the cabinet.
Several years ago, the mines ministry was relegated to the role of “vice-ministry” in the Ministry of Economic Development, thereby diminishing the voice of mining in Bolivia’s government.
“A new day is dawning in Bolivia for the mining sector with the new Ministry of Mining and Metallurgy,” says Alvaro Riveros, a director with Salt Lake City, Utah-based Golden Eagle International in La Paz, and a former vice-minister of Natural Resources. “Having a minister at the cabinet level gives mining better access to Bolivia’s decision-makers.”
Golden Eagle has several land holdings in the country.
