Boliden hits the mark at GarpenbergUnderground drilling by Swedish miner Boliden (BLS-T) in the Garpenberg area in central Sweden, has encountered “extensive mineralization.”
The holes, sunk from the 900-metre level, aimed at the 850- and 1400-metre levels. Holes from the surface were designed to test the 500-600-metre levels.
“The results of the drilling so far indicate that we have discovered a mineralization of considerable size,” says Jan Johansson, president and CEO of Boliden.
Highlighting results from underground drilling is an 11.45-metre section grading 2.1 grams gold, 198 grams silver 0.13% copper, 9.1% zinc and 6% lead.
A surface hole returned intervals ranging between 7 and 34 metres from 614 to 814 metres below surface. Gold grades are typically less than 0.5 gram gold, silver runs 51 to 359 grams, zinc 4.1 to 7.9% and lead 1 to 3.3%. Copper grades were not available.
The average grades run higher than those of the reserves at the company’s operating Garpenberg mine. Dubbed Lappberget, the area is situated between the Garpenberg and Garpenberg Norra mines, and is covered by an exploration permit. It also lies within the 1-km protection zone around the two mines’ existing exploitation concessions.
Remaining proven ore reserve at Boliden’s Grapenberg mine average 0.4 gram gold, 143 grams silver, 0.1% copper, 3.7% zinc and 1/9% lead.
The company has begun an exploration program aimed at sizing up the tonnage and grade of the find. Drilling is also designed to define the structures and give clues to the connection between the mineralized areas. Surface holes will aim to determine the zone’s upper limit. Further drifting is also under way to provide better access.
