Birim Goldfields (BIRM-C) has added a past-producing gold mine to its assets in Ghana.
The company bought a 50% participating interest in the Akrokeri mine, which is adjacent to, and on strike with, the Obuasi deposit of Ashanti Goldfields (AHD-T).
Between 1905 to 1909, the 48-sq.-km Akrokeri concession produced 75,000 oz.
gold from 104,000 tons of ore, representing an average grade of 0.72 oz. gold per ton. The mineralized zone extends over 550 metres and consists of a 2-metre-wide quartz vein.
More recently, in 1988, soil sampling, trenching and geophysical surveys were carried out, but no diamond drilling. Also, the deposit has yet to be assessed for its oxide gold potential.
Both Birim and Esmerelda Exploration, the Australian company that holds the other 50% interest, will spend US$250,000 in an effort to define drill targets. Birim will act as operator.
