Some heavyweights are moving into the Peat Resources picture, The Northern Miner gathers from conversation with the company’s president, Leon La Prairie. Inco Ltd., Esso Resources Canada and Lacana Mining Corp. are now joining this project to develop fuel peat from its Northern Ontario peatlands. Also, the Ontario government has agreed to support the project with grants, Mr La Prairie says.
The present program, which will be financed by the above participants, will consist of an engineering and market feasibility study at a cost of $400,000. This will examine the economic viability of developing and operating a peat processing plant to provide fuel for both industrial and power generating purposes.
Depending on the results of this study, the initial production program would involve the design, construction and operation of a demonstration fuel peat plant.
The annual capacity of such a plant would be 250,000 tonnes of fuel peat, at an estimated cost of $30 million.
