A new gold deposit model for the North American Cordillera is identified in a paper by Christopher Ash of the British Columbia Geological Survey. Gold deposits of Atlin, Cache Creek, Bralorne-Pioneer, Rossland, Barkerville, and Cassiar are closely assoicated with mafic and ultramafic host rocks. Ash’s report, Bulletin 108, defines the geological characteristics of deposits in mafic and ultramafic rocks.
These types of deposits have been mined for more than 100 years, though their genetic relationship to ophiolitic rocks is little understood. The report describes the geology of ophiolites and discusses their tectonic setting.
