BC mines awarded

Thirteen British Columbia mines were recognized at the province’s 36th annual Safety Awards, part of the recent Mining Week festivities.

Fording Coal’s Greenhills operation was a double winner, receiving the Occupational Health and Safety Committee Trophy and the Edward Prior Safety Award, each for the fourth straight year. It shared the latter award, given to the open-pit mine with the lowest injury frequency, with the Gibraltar mine of Westmin Resources (now Boliden).

Other companies picking up hardware included: Highland Valley Copper (John Ash Safety Award); Bull River Mineral (Small Underground Mine Award); and Construction Aggregates, Lafarge Construction Materials, Steelhead Aggregates and Westroc (Stewart/O’Brian Safety Award).
