BC Geological Survey organizes Cordilleran field trip

The British Columbia Geological Survey and the University of Victoria are organizing a 10-day field trip, beginning May 13, to examine several mineral deposits in the province’s southern region and northern Washington state.

Participants will visit various types of deposits common to the Cordillera, including: calc-alkalic and alkalic porphyry; vein (epithermal and mesothermal); gold and copper skarn; manto; volcanogenic massive sulphide; and sediment-hosted base metal (sedementary-exhalative, Irish and Mississippi Valley Type).

Discussions will focus on the genesis of these deposits, their exploration potential, and tectonic setting. The trip will begin with an examination of volcanic arc terranes and end with sedimentary sequences typical of North America.

The trip will include visits to more than 15 operating mines and past-producers, including Sullivan, Highland Valley, and some deposits in the Kootenay Arc.
