Balmat floats first zinc

HudBay Minerals (HBM-T) has produced the first zinc concentrate from the reopened Balmat mine in upstate New York.

The mine returned to production on schedule, having been slated to ship concentrate before the end of June. Full production is scheduled for 2008, when the mine should be turning out about 60,000 tonnes zinc.

Most Balmat concentrate will be shipped to the Canadian Electrolytic Zinc plant in Valleyfield, Que., with some going to HudBay in Flin Flon, Man. Canadian Electrolytic is owned by the Noranda Income Fund (NIF.UN-T) in which Falconbridge (FAL.LV-T, FAL-N) in turn owns 25%.
