B. C. mines are cited for reclamation work

Four British Columbia mining/ exploration companies have been recognized for the quality, innovation and research work that has gone into rehabilitation of mining areas in the province.

Three mines cited are Equity Silver’s Houston mine, the Afton copper mine of Teck Corp., and Westar Mining’s Balmer coal mine. In addition, Cordilleran Engineering gained a citation for its work at two exploration sites in B.C.

Metal mines, coal mines and exploration projects are all entered in the annual awards competitions, results of which are announced at a yearly government-sponsored mine reclamation symposium. This year’s was held at Vernon, B.C., and attracted more than 160 delegates from industry, government and universities.

Equity’s Houston mine received the major award, for its work on acid mine drainage control. Afton’s copper mine and the Balmer coal mine were both cited for reclaiming wildlife and waterfowl habitat from disused mine areas.

On the exploration side, Cordilleran was cited for filling and reseeding access roads, drill sites and exploration trenches.
