“District inspectors of mines have given instructions to correct deficiencies found during the audit,” said the Minister.
The safety audit was initiated by the chief inspector and conducted by an independent consulting firm following a recent ministry study of mine safety at five mine sites — Cheni Gold Mines, Skyline Gold Corp., Newhawk Gold Mines, Cominco Ltd.’s Snip project and Geddes Resources’ Windy Craggy project.
The audit was undertaken to determine how well companies meet their obligations under the terms of the Mines Act and to assist both companies and ministry inspectors in efforts to provide a safe work place for mine workers.
An encouraging note is that the accident frequency in the mining industry is far lower than comparable heavy industries in the province.
“We would like to keep it that way,” said Davis.
