Seventeen teams battled it out at the provincial mine rescue and first-aid competitions recently held at the Fernie ski hill in southeastern British Columbia.
Westar Mining’s Greenhills operation edged out five competitors including Gibraltar, Endako, Quintette, Nickel Plate and Line Creek for the provincial open pit championship.
In the provincial underground category, Cominco Ltd.’s Sullivan mine took top spot over a team from the Snip mine as well as a second Sullivan group. Echo Bay Mines’ Lupin operation won the underground competition for the Northwest Territories, canning two Cominco teams; one from the Polaris and another from the Nanisivik mine.
Five 3-person teams competed in the first-aid contest with Fording Coal beating out Westar’s Greenhills operation, Teck’s Bullmoose and Quintette mines, as well as the Gibraltar team.
The rescue championships are judged by the Mines Ministry’s inspectors as well as industry personnel, while the 3-person first-aid contest is judged by St. John’s Ambulance.
