Australia counts on its minerals

Mineral resources have contributed greatly to Australia’s growth and continue to do so, a luncheon gathering of the Toronto branch of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) was told recently.

“Mineral exports today represent about one-half of all Australian exports,” said Sir Arvi Parbo, a leader in the Australian mining industry for many years.

Australia is the largest exporter in the world of coal, iron ore and alumina, and a top producer of copper, nickel, lead, zinc, gold, tin and diamonds. A native of Estonia, Parbo has lived in Australia since 1949. He worked his way through the executive ranks of Western Mining Corp. and is currently non-executive chairman of that company.

Parbo was guest speaker at the CIM branch’s 13th Hamilton Lecture, an annual event which was established by SNC-Lavalin of Montreal as a tribute to brothers Robert and Philip Hamilton for their contribution to the Canadian mining industry.
