The Co-operative Research Centre for Mining Technology and Equipment (CMTE) in Brisbane, Australia, has commissioned a study to determine ways to increase the productivity of shovels used in open-pit mines.
Researchers from the University of Queensland and the University of Sydney are overseeing the study, which is taking place at the Lemington coal mine in southeastern Australia.
Three improvements are sought: a system to provide operators with faster and more accurate operating data; a shovel payload estimator to determine the amount of material shifted in each cycle of an electric rope shovel; and a 3-dimensional radar combined with visualization software.
The CMTE was established under the Australian government’s Co-operative Research Centres program.
