Aussie nickel bet may feed Sherritt

A potential customer for the concentrate of a yet-to-be developed nickel deposit in Australia is Sherritt Gordon (TSE), the U.S. Bureau of Mines reports in a monthly publication. Australian gold producer Dominion Mining is pondering developing its wholly owned Six Mile deposit in Western Australia, the government agency says. Six Mile is described as a large, low-grade sulphide deposit containing reserves of 100 million tons grading 0.53% nickel. A Dominion study indicates an 18% nickel concentrate low on impurities could be produced.

Recent technological advances may be on the side of the project’s development, says the agency, citing improvements in gangue depressants and flotation columns.

Sherritt may be a potential customer because its refinery at Fort Saskatchewan, Alta., is operating below capacity on an annual basis.
