Aussie gold output down

The Australian Bureau of Agriculture and Resources projects that gold production in that country for the year ended June 30, 2002, will be 288 tonnes (9.2 million oz.), versus a previous forecast of 296 tonnes (9.5 million oz.).

The reduction is due to the treatment of lower-grade ore, and the exhaustion of some orebodies.

Meanwhile, a Gokhran official has reported Russian gold production for the first 11 months of the year at 145.8 tonnes (4.68 million oz.), an increase of 7.7% from the corresponding period a year ago. Byproduct and scrap material contributed 11.63 tonnes (374,000 oz.) to the total.

The preceding is from an information bulletin published by the London-based World Gold Council.
