Asarco forms new divisions

Two operations consolidations were announced recently by Asarco (NYSE).

The large copper producer has merged its Amarillo copper refinery and El Paso copper smelter, both in Texas, to form its Southwestern Copper division. And the company has formed a Western Specialty Metals division, consolidating the operations of its East Helena, Mont., lead smelter, Omaha, Neb., lead refinery and Globe specialty metals refinery in Denver, Colo. Last year, the company integrated its Asarco Ray mine and Hayden smelter in Arizona (now known as the Ray complex) and formed a Missouri lead division by merging its Missouri lead mines with its Glover, Mo., smelter-refinery.
