An expansion project at the Mission complex in Arizona that will increase copper mine production by about 27,000 tons per year has been announced by Asarco Inc. of New York. The project will cost $13.1 million and is expected to be completed before the end of 1988.
The project will increase production of copper concentrates at Mission by 95,000 tons to 300,000 tons per year. Upon completion of the project, Asarco’s mines will be able to supply 67% of the concentrates required to keep the company’s copper smelters operating at capacity, up from about 60% currently. The company says expansion will also help reduce production costs.
Acquisition by the company of additional ore reserves and water rights at the complex made the expansion possible. The project will expand the capacity of the Mission mill by creating an additional grinding and flotation circuit, increasing ball mill throughput, replacing convential cleaner flotation cells with new column flotation cells and installing an on-stream computer analysis system.
