Articulated Terex
Three articulated dump trucks with payload capacities of up to 40 tons have been introduced by Terex of Hudson, Ohio.
They include the 2766 (with a 27.5-ton payload capacity); the 3066 (with a 30-ton capacity); and the 4066 (with a 40-ton capacity).
The trucks are designed for crowded, muddy work sites where traction is poor and manoeuvrability essential.
Features include: permanent, 6×6, all-wheel drive with automatic limited slip differentials in each axle; a unique suspension system that keeps all four rear wheels on the ground at all times; a turbo-charged, air-cooled Deutz diesel rated at 237 hp in the 2766; a liquid-cooled Cummins lta 10 engine with 275 hp in the 3066; a 10-cylinder, air-cooled Deutz engine with 359 hp in the 4066; caliper disc brakes, one per wheel; and a spacious 2-man cab.
V-Belt Drive
A new, variable-speed v-belt drive with increased power and speed is available from Sew-Eurodrive of Bramalea, Ont.
Called the Varigear, the new drive has a speed range of 8:1. Features include; modular construction; a wide variety of mounting positions and comfigurations; and optional adjustment and indication accessories.
Dresser Dozer
Improved operator controls, a 520-hp engine and a heavy-duty drive train are features of a crawler tractor recently introduced by Dresser.
Powered by a turbo-charged, Cummins KTA-19C engine, the TD-40B incorporates a host of drive train improvements over the company’s TD-40 model, including larger final drive gears and bearings, larger steering drive gears and a torque converter hub bearing with increased thrust capacity for longer life.
Increased operator comfort has been achieved through the positioning of various controls.
Self-cleaning Solids-monitor
A suspended solids-monitor, equipped with an automatic sensor cleaning system, has been introduced by Capital Controls in Colmar, Pa.
Called the Series 1888, the sensor features a venturi measuring cell that reduces light source and photo cell fouling. The cell is unaffected by variations in ambient light.
Two measuring ranges are available: 1,000 to 6,000 mg per l or 5,000 to 10,000 mg per l.
Infra-red Reflectors
Large-diameter survey reflectors have been introduced by MRM Products of Calgary, Alta.
Designed specifically for measuring movements in mine slopes, the new reflectors are 51 mm in diameter. Features include solid optical glass prisms mounted on rugged housings designed for long-term outdoor use.
Global Positioner
Resource Industry Associates of Melbourne, Australia is marketing a hand-held global positioning device to the exploration industry Down Under.
The unit, manufactured in the U.S. by Magellan Systems Corp., has received the approval of the Australian Mineral Industries Research Association after extensive field trials.
The unit receives signals from three satellites to calculate the instrument’s longitude and latitude. Accuracy is five to seven metres.
The unit uses six aa batteries and weighs fewer than 850 grams.
A Smart Dozer
A 128-hp, 16-ton crawler tractor has been introduced by Liebherr. It is called the PR 722.
An electronic control system, called Litronic, monitors, co-ordinates, regulates and controls all functions of the travel drive system and attachments.
Sensors continuously pass information from various hydraulic functions to the Litronic processor. There, adjustments are made instantly and fed back to the various hydraulic functions, producing ideally balanced conditions between travel speed and attachment load. The result is increased utilization of power
The PR 722 is powered by a turbo-charged, heavy-duty, water-cooled Liebherr diesel engine.
Other features include: electronically monitored pump motor speeds on each track; track and frame suspension; compact final drives mounted completely within the track frame structure; and an ergonomically designed operator’s cab.
Integrated Friction Hoist
MAN GHH and Siemens have constructed an integrated winder/motor friction hoist. The unit uses a frequency-controlled, 3-phase, a.c. motor. The compact unit can result in considerable savings in foundation and civil engineering work, a company release says.
The complete machine is supported at two points only. Thus, it is insensitive to movements in the foundation. Also, the rigidity of the system is much greater compared with conventional machines. This reduces possible movements between the stator and the rotor.
Electric Mucking Machine
A rubber-tired, articulated, electric-powered continuous loader, called the AL30 and marketed by Wajax Industries, has been operating at the Kidd Creek mine in Timmins, Ont. for about four months.
Loading into 25-ton Volvo trucks (designed for surface haulage) in a decline measuring 15×16 ft., the unit loaded the trucks at a rate of five tons per minute. One 12-ft. round was mucked out in two to 2.5 minutes, a company release says. Loading time per truck ranges from four to five minutes compared with 12 to 15 minutes using a 5-cu-yd. load-haul-dump machine. The decline has been advanced 400 ft. since early September.
Earlier in 1989, the company tested a larger, crawler-mounted AL60 unit at Brunswick Mining & Smelting’s No. 12 mine in Bathurst, N.B.
Variable-speed Inverter
Sew-Eurodrive of Bramalea, Ont. is marketing a series of inverters from Mitsubishi.
Ideal for applications requiring controlled acceleration, deceleration and variable speeds with a.c. induction motors from 0.5 to 75 hp, the inverters are more powerful, efficient and reliable than ever before, a company release says.
They are equipped with new transistors, which eliminate base amp driver circuitry and operate at lower temperatures than previous models (minus 10^o (deg)/C).
A 16-bit microprocessor allows programming and communications. Speed, volts and amps can be monitored and up to 15 alarm codes for ease of troubleshooting.
Models range from 0.5 to 360 Hz.
Protection for Metal Wear Parts
A hypervelocity metal spray process is available from Peacock Inc. of Mississauga, Ont.
The process sprays tungsten carbide, chromium carbide, triballoy, nickel, special iron, cobalt or other mixed powders on to machine parts to protect them from wear and to prolong their useful lives.
High-kinetic energy provided by the process transforms into thermal energy that results in bonds displaying greater hardness and higher densities than those obtained by regular “d” gun or conventional plasma flame spraying, a company release says.
Gigantic Crusher
P.R. Engineering, which began as a 1-employee, single-line manufacturer of crushers, will be shipping a refurbished, heavy-duty crusher to a steel company in the U.S.
At 66×84 inches, the crusher is one of the largest in the world.
In fact, the company says making large cone and jaw crushers is a specialty. P.R. Engineering’s crushers are sold to the mining and aggregate industries.
The company began as a maker of Birdsboro Buchanan Jaw Crushers. Today, P.R. Engineering has a 40,000-square-foot manufacturing plant producing crushers and milling equipment.
Dozer Details
Long-track, wide-track and low-ground-pressure versions of two crawler tractors are available from Dresser Marketing Division of Libertyville, Ill.
The long-track version of the TD-7G (52-kW) and TD-8G (60-kW) tractors are equipped with six, rather than five, rollers. Longer-track frames provide improved grading control and are well-suited for dozing heavier loads while the blade is in the full- angle position.
The wide-track models (61 cm wide) give a low center of gravity, ideal for work on slopes.
And the low-ground-pressure models combine both long-track and wide-track features to distribute the weight of the tractors to 0.30 kg per sq. cm for the TD-7G and 0.32 kg per sq. cm for the TD-8G.
Standard equipment includes a lubricated track system, which provides longer wear life than do dry track units; an iso-mounted engine; single-stage torque converter; a countershaft powershift transmission; and short-throw steering/breaking leavers.
