ALPART to open in March, 1989

ALPART, the largest of four major alumina plants in Jamaica, will start producing alumina by the end of March 1989.

Under a recently signed agreement, the ALPART plant will be owned by Kaiser Jamaica Corporation and Hydro Aluminum A.S.

Kaiser currently owns 50% of the plant, and Reynolds’ Metals Company owns the other half. However, negotiations under way would sell 25% of Reynolds’ share to Hydro Aluminum and another 25% to Kaiser, giving it the majority share.

Hydro Aluminum A.S. is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Norsk Hydro, a Norwegian company with substantial interest in aluminum, oil and chemicals.
