Alcan smelter

Startup of the Laterriere aluminum smelter at Chicoutimi, Que., was recently resumed by Alcan. Phase one should be fully operational by April 11, the company says; startup of the second phase will then be commenced and should be completed by May 15. Laterriere, with annual capacity of 200,000 tonnes, is a replacement smelter built to retire some of the Soderberg-type potlines at the company’s Arvida smelter. Problems with the company’s hydroelectric system slowed the phase-one startup.
