Major aluminum producer Alcan (TSE) reports a recent doubling of its recycling capability in the U.S. and plans to build a major recycling centre in the United Kingdom. According to Chairman David Morton, the day may come when aluminum, with its high recyclable value, will be “leased” rather than sold, with aluminum products being returned for recycling at the end of their useful lives.
Alcan, active in more than 20 countries, reported capital expenditures in 1989 of US$1.47 billion compared with US$676 million the previous year. Net income in 1989 was US$835 million.
