Alcan celebrates centenary

Alcan is celebrating its centenary by donating the buildings where the first aluminium casting took place plus $1.1 million to La Cit de l’Energie, a non-profit corporation in Quebec, which has agreed to restore the site.

In Canada, aluminum was first cast in Shawinigan, Que., in 1901. The facilities, which consisted of an aluminum smelter and a cable mill, were subsequently acquired by Alcan.

A plaque commemorating the event will be displayed in front of the administrative building at the former industrial complex.

Alcan has annual revenues of about US$13 billion.
