Alan Edward Gallie — known to everyone as “Doc” — a former vice-president of Sherritt Gordon Mines, died recently. He was 90.
Gallie was a graduate of the mining engineering program at the University of Toronto, but he was a born engineer and outdoorsman. He worked for Sherritt Gordon Mines for 42 years in numerous mining camps throughout northern Ontario and Manitoba.
In 1939, he married his high school sweetheart Mary Mitchell and took her to northern Manitoba where they spent their first winter in a tent at -40.
As mine manager at Lynn Lake, Man., Gallie once organized the move of the entire town of Sherridon — including buildings, people, and dogs — 230 km over a winter road to a new mine site at Lynn Lake.
Later, Gallie became vice-president of sales and travelled around the world selling Sherritt’s nickel. He eventually retired and lived with Mary at the so-called “Saltbox,” near Claremont, Ont., just outside Toronto, until August.
He died in his daughter’s home in Toronto, surrounded by family.
Gallie is survived by his daughters Joan, Brenda and Ann, and by four grandchildren.
