Alan Coope

Alan Coope, founder of the Ottawa-based Association of Exploration Geochemists and former director of geochemistry for Newmont Mining, has died. He was 66.

Coope received his doctorate degree in applied geochemistry from the Royal School of Mines in London.

He joined Newmont in 1958 and remained with the company for 33 years. In the early 1960s, he helped discover the Carlin gold deposit in Nevada.

He served as president of the Geological Association of Canada from 1985 to 1986 and was a member of the Society of Economic Geologists, the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum, and the Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada.

He is survived by his wife, Carol, and two children, James and Brenda.
