Underground mining operations at AfriOre‘s (AFO-T) Springlake anthracite colliery, north of Dundee in Kwazulu Natal, have been suspended following a rock fall in a limited area of section 6 of the mine.
The company continues work aimed at recovering the remains an electric scoop operator, the incident’s lone fatality. Officials from the Department of Minerals and Energy are on site to investigate the cause of the accident.
Meanwhile, production from the open-pit portion of the operation has resumed. AfriOre plans to make up for lost underground production with stockpiled material.
No estimate of the length of the suspension was given.
