Dummett will oversee the launch of exploration work at African Minerals’ Platreef platinum group metals project in South Africa’s Northern Province. The project area is within the Potgietersrus limb of the Bushveld Igneous Complex, some 9 km south of Anglo American Platinum’s rich Sandsloot platinum-palladium mine.
In February, Platreef Resources, a subsidiary of African Minerals, was granted a prospecting contract to evaluate two contiguous farms — Turfspruit and Macalacaskop — covering an area of 7,840 ha on the Platreef horizon, which can be traced for more than 8 km on the two farms. Since its inception seven years ago, African Minerals has spent more than US$7 million exploring for: platinum and diamonds in South Africa; copper, diamonds and emeralds in Zambia; and copper in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The company is 40.6%-owned by Ivanhoe founder Robert Friedland.
