AFRICA SPECIAL — NEWS ROUNDUP — Hymex recovers 24.7-carat diamond

During 1996, Hymex Diamond (HMD-V) produced 21,552 carats of diamonds from its alluvial mining operations in Guinea, West Africa. The diamonds are currently being sold by auction in Antwerp, Belgium.

The Vancouver-based company expects to produce 144,000 carats with an estimated value of US$2.4 million during the fiscal 1997 season.

In December 1996, the company recovered 2,204 stones weighing a total of 1,171 carats — a 217% increase over production during December 1995. The three largest stones recovered weighed 12.97, 17.3 and 24.7 carats.
