AFRICA SPECIAL — Akiko explores Afere-Antubia ground

Exploration is set to begin on the 54-sq.-mile Afere-Antubia gold concession of Akiko Gold Resources (AKI-V) in Ghana’s Bibiani greenstone belt.

The land package contains the old, underground Antubia mine, which, just before the outbreak of the Second World War, produced gold from ore grading nearly 0.5 oz. per ton. It also contains numerous near-surface, gold-bearing quartz veins currently being mined by local villagers.

Akiko Gold says the concession has potential for hosting deposits minable by open-pit and underground methods — similar to those being mined in Ghana’s greenstone belts.

Last year, Akiko completed two phases of reconnaissance exploration at the concession. The results, which included geological and geophysical programs as well as extensive soil sampling, are being used to generate targets for this year’s work program.
