Australian-listed Ranger Minerals is commissioning the Damang gold mine in Ghana, a large, open-pit deposit considered to be one of the continent’s top five gold projects outside of South Africa.
Production from the property is expected to be 290,000 oz. per year, though recent reports suggest that the operation could expand to more than 330,000 oz. per year by the end of 1999.
The property is reported to host 2 million contained ounces of minable reserves within an overall resource of about 3 million contained ounces.
Potential also exists for resources to increase from lower-grade material or underground mineralization. Ranger is also evaluating other projects in Ghana, and elsewhere in Africa.
