ABB heads to the Congo

Swiss-based power and automation group, ABB, has just signed a $15- million deal for six thyristor rectifier plants and related engineering services for a newcopper and cobalt refinery in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

The project, located at the defunct Komoto Oliveira Virgule mine, is a joint venture between Nikanor (NKR-L) and the DRC government.

In an attempt to rehabilitate the mine, the partners will construct a state-of-the-art refining plant that will produce 250,000 tons of LME A-grade copper cathode and 27,500 tons of cobalt per year.

ABB’s thyristor rectifier plants will convert locally available AC power into DC power.

In addition to the thyristor rectifier plants, ABB will supply fibre optic current sensors, DC isolators, power factor correction and harmonic filter plants, and 66-kilovolt isolators.
