50th anniversary at Noranda High

Noranda High School, founded 50 years ago, will have a reunion in Rouyn-Noranda, Que., Aug. 3-6. Many of its graduates are now in the mining or mining-related professions. Some hold important positions in companies such as Noranda Inc. and Cominco Ltd. Rouyn-Noranda used to be a company town, owned by Noranda Mines, (now Noranda Inc.). In the early years, the school was financed by Noranda. The students, whose parents worked for Noranda, in turn sent their own children to their alma mater.

Eric Nieminen, chairman of the reunion committee, told The Northern Miner that the organizers have sent out 2,000 invitations and have received 1,500 paid registrations.

Nieminen, a graduate in 1944, is general manager of Acmies in Rouyn-Noranda, which sells mining equipment.
