1993 A LOOK BACK — Giant mine workers return

Union members at the Giant mine in Yellowknife, N.W.T., returned to their jobs in early December, ending a labor dispute dating back to May, 1992.

Some 25 members of the Canadian Association of Smelter and Allied Workers went back to work alongside the replacement workers brought in by mine owner Royal Oak Mines (TSE).

The Canada Labor Relations Board found that both the company and the union had bargained in bad faith during their negotiations and ordered them to come to an agreement based on an earlier, failed agreement.

The violent dispute took a turn for the worse in September, 1992, when three replacement workers and six workers who crossed picket lines were killed in an underground explosion. A union member has been charged with nine counts of first-degree murder.
