Blockade halts Trevali’s Santander mine

Operations at Trevali Mining’s (TTSX: TV; US-OTC: TREVF) Santander zinc mine in Peru were temporarily halted after a “small group of community members and other persons not affiliated with the Santander mine” blocked the main road access preventing a scheduled delivery of supplies.

The protesters allege that the company “has failed to satisfy its community investment obligations under its agreement with the Santa Cruz de Andamarca community,” Trevali reported on Sept. 26.

Management says the company has “complied with all of its contractual obligations to the community and fully cooperated with government departments and other authorities regarding the blockade.”

The senior management team “is proactively engaging with the local community and is in ongoing consultation with elected community leaders to discuss their concerns and ensure that mine operations continue without further interruption,” the company stated.

The zinc-lead-silver underground mine is 215 km northeast of Lima.

Santander remains on track to meet its production guidance for zinc this year of 55 million to 58 million payable lbs., the company says, but acknowledges that the blockade will negatively impact production and sales in the quarter.

Full production is expected to resume within the week.

Trevali is currently mining the Magistral North, Magistral Central and Magistral South deposits.

Santander has a 2,000 tonne per day processing plant and conventional sulphide flotation mills.
