Letter to the editor: A little help

Thank you for The Northern Miner. I enjoy it very much. I turned 101 on Sept. 19 and am very active, and like to keep up on what’s happening in our world.

In 1950 I had some gold valued by a local jeweller — he valued it at $5,000. Could you tell me what the current value would be?

Editor’s note: The average world price for a 24-carat ounce of gold in 1950 was US$34.72, according to GFMS (It was fixed at US$35 in the U.S.). Today it sells for 35.54 times more, or US$1,234 per oz. at press time. Therefore, the gold in question, if it’s pure, would be worth US$177,707.37 today.
