U.S. markets, Sept. 9-13

The Dow Jones Industrial Average posted its best gain since January, climbing 453.54 points, or 3.04%, to 15,376.06; and the S&P 500 Index reported its best gain in two months, rising 1.98%, or 32.82 points, to 1,687.99. The Nasdaq Composite advanced 62.17 points, or 1.70%, to 3,722.18; and the Philadelphia Gold & Silver Index dropped 7.12%, or 7.33 points, to 95.68.

Hopes that a partnership could be salvaged and repaired between Uralkali and Belaruskali, which would boost potash prices, sent the shares of Agrium, Mosaic, Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan and Intrepid Potash up sharply. Agrium advanced US$4.27 to US$89.45 per share, Mosaic climbed US$3.83 to US$45.99, PotashCorp increased US$2.32 to US$32.49 and Intrepid Potash ended US$2.19 per share higher at US$15.10.

Quest Rare Minerals jumped 28% to US70¢ per share on no news. Earlier this month the company announced that it had produced separate heavy and light rare earth concentrates from its Strange Lake B-zone deposit. On Sept. 5 Quest reported that it had produced a heavy rare earth plus yttrium concentrate with a purity level of 84% from metallurgical test work, of which 75% is made up of yttrium oxide.

Rare Element Resources also traded higher, rising 23% to US$2.49 per share, on no news. The junior reported in August that it is extending the 2013 drilling program at its Bear Lodge project to provide data for a mineable pit at the high-grade zone within the Bull Hill deposit. It will also investigate the potential for an even higher-grade core within that zone that might be mined in the early production years to improve project economics.

Alderon Iron Ore jumped 13% to US$1.44 during the week. On Sept. 12 the company announced that it had signed an engagement letter that makes BNP Paribas the lead arranger of up to a US$1-billion senior debt-financing facility to complete the construction and start-up of the Kami iron ore project in the Labrador Trough. The company expects that part of the project’s debt financing will come from Chinese banks due to Hebei Iron & Steel’s involvement in the project.
