Canadian mining investment in Mexico


The mining sector represents 44% of all Canadian foreign direct investment in Mexico, according to figures tabulated by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Mexico.

Canadian mining companies have invested about $5 billion in Mexico over the last five years, including $2 billion during the last two years — despite the global recession.

About 20,000 direct jobs have been created by Canadian mining companies with operations in Mexico. The average salary for direct employment in mining inMexico is US$30,000 per year, per job.

In terms of foreign mining companies active in Mexico, the breakdown by country of origin is: Canada (76%), U.S. (15%), U.K. (3%), Australia (2%) and others (4%). For foreign-owned mines, the split is: Canada (68%), U.S. (14%) and others (18%).
