A plane crash near Iamgold‘s (IMG-T) Niobec mine in Quebec’s Sauguenay region has left two crew members dead and two passengers in hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Iamgold has confirmed that the passengers are Iamgold employees.
The plane, a Beechcraft King Air 100, was en route from Val d’Or, Que., to St. Honore, Que., when it when it went down around 10:45 p.m. Wednesday night, according to a CBC online report.
The pilot and co-pilot were in contact with air traffic control at Canadian Forces Base Bagotville between 10:30 p.m. and 10:45 p.m.
It took until 4:45 a.m. for rescuers to find the accident site.
Canadian Forces Base Trenton received a signal from an emergency transmitter located on the plane and contacted Bagotville.
A Hercules airplane from Trenton and a Griffon helicopter from Bagotville were used in the search and rescue operation.
The passengers were still conscious during the search. One of them called 911 on a cell phone but because the windows of the plane were covered in snow, he couldn’t help with the search.
The region was battling a major snowstorm with strong winds. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
