The Toronto Stock Exchange soared to its highest close in more than three weeks on Nov. 16 with an oil price rally that fuelled energy shares. But overall during the Nov. 10-16 reporting period, the S&P/TSX composite index advanced just 85.52 points or 0.75% to finish at 11,512.26, while the Capped Metals and Mining index increased 19.77 points or 2.07% to 976.53.
Strong gold and silver prices continued to buoy precious metals stocks. Spot silver reached a peak of US$18.43 per oz. on Nov. 16, its firmest threshold since July 2008. Pan American Silver added $1.61 to $26 per share on news that its silver and gold production reached record levels in the third quarter. Net income for the quarter tallied US$17.4 million or US20¢ per share, a year-on-year increase of 172%.
News out of Indonesia that Newmont Mining and Sumitomo have fulfilled their divestiture obligations to the government sent Newmont shares up $1.35 to $54.75. Newmont and Sumitomo have sold 10% of their share in PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara to a consortium of regional and local governments near the Batu Hijau mine, and a private company. Newmont has received 56.25% of the proceeds of US$391 million; its ownership in Batu will fall to 39.38% from 45%.
Imperial Metals surged 47.2% or $2.87 to finish at $8.95 per share following drill results at its Red Chris property in British Columbia. Hole 350 returned 152.5 metres grading 4.12% copper and 8.83 grams gold per tonne starting at 540 metres. Of the 62 assay intervals in the 152.5-metre run, six returned less than 2% copper and only four returned less than 4 grams gold.
Gabriel Resources was up 32% to $3.30 per share on news that it had found an investor to help back its Rosia Montana gold project in Romania. BSG Capital Markets, part of the private Beny Steinmetz Group, will buy 30 million units of Gabriel at $2.25 each for proceeds of $67.5 million.
Crystallex International skyrocketed 70% to 46¢ per share on no news, prompting the junior to issue a statement that it was unaware of any material undisclosed developments that would account for the high trading volume and stock price. Crystallex is locked in a dispute with the Venezuelan government over ownership of the Las Cristinas gold project. Financial results released on Nov. 11 indicate Crystallex had cash and equivalents of US$4.9 million as of Sept. 30; management said it has enough cash to fund its operations through the first quarter of 2010.
Agrium climbed $1.72 to $56.40. On Nov. 16, RiskMetrics recommended that shareholders in CF Industries Holdings tender their shares to Agrium’s takeover offer of US$45 in cash and one share of Agrium for each CF share — a 109% premium to CF’s Jan. 15 price of $47.23. CF’s board is still against the merger, first proposed in February.
