It was a fairly quiet week for the S&P/TSX Venture Composite index over June 23-29. Combining small gains and losses, the index managed to finish the week up 26.9 points at 1,105.56. Daily trading volumes were subdued, averaging 59.6 million.
After several weeks during which more juniors reached new 52-week share price highs than fell to new lows, the ratio reversed itself: only 16 Venture-listed companies climbed to new heights, while 25 sank to new lows.
Trading volumes remained high for Appleton Exploration, the junior that the previous week announced hitting 192 grams gold per tonne over 10 metres at its Manalo project in Mali. The news pushed its share price as high as 64¢ from just 20¢. But this week, investors were treated to a closer look at the intercept and realized almost all the gold was actually within a 1-metre segment; the other 9 metres were essentially barren. Appleton’s share price is now back down at 20¢.
The biggest absolute gain of the week went to International Tower Hill Mines. The company’s share price gained 49¢ to close at $3.75 on the back of a new resource estimate for the Money Knob gold deposit at Tower Hill’s Livengood project in Alaska. At a 0.3-gram gold cutoff grade, the indicated gold count now stands at 5.2 million oz. and inferred resources boost contained gold to 10.5 million oz.
News of significant alluvial gold potential at its Guyanese properties lifted Sacre-Coeur Minerals’ share price 39¢ to reach 91¢. The results of a test pitting and gravity beneficiation program indicate the presence of gold-bearing alluvial sand over 1.7 km of strike, 800 metres width, and 2.5 metres depth, with grades ranging from 2 to 9 grams gold per cubic metre.
Investors have come to expect a lot from Underworld Resources’ White Gold project in the Yukon, and were apparently displeased with the project’s latest drill results, which included 3.2 grams gold over 45 metres. The company’s share price lost 48¢ to close at $1.53.
Coniagas Resources, a junior exploring for lithium near James Bay, Que., has seen its share price climb from 40¢ in February to near $1.50 in June; it gained 35¢ last week alone. Last year, the company identified a 4.8-km-long corridor hosting pegmatite dykes at its James Bay property and it is currently conducting a resistivity induced-polarization survey at the site.
Continuing its slow share price climb, SanGold added 26¢ to end the week at $2.36. In October, the company hit a new high of 60¢. The company is exploring two new, high-grade zones near its Rice Lake mine and mill and recently received $37 million from a warrant exercise.
And Rainy River Resources gained 19¢ to reach $2.20 on news of a new president and CEO. Raymond Threlkeld is taking over from Nelson Baker, who is retiring.
