TORONTO STOCK EXCHANGE JULY 2-7

It was nothing short of a bloodbath. The S&PTSX Composite Index crashed 754.23 points, or 5.3%, to 13,712.8 during the July 1-7 trading session, while the Capped Metals and Mining Index fell 94.28 points, or 10.9%, to 764.34. Markets were closed on July 1 to celebrate Canada Day.

Even stock market darlings like Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan, Agrium and Fording Canadian Coal Trust took major hits. Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan lost $25.32 to close at $211.25, Agrium dropped $10.73 to $99.22 and Fording Canadian Coal plummeted $19.33 to $78.17.

In the precious metals space, recent reports of wide gold intersects in northern Ontario at its Detour Lake gold property weren’t enough to prevent Detour Gold from sliding $4.68 to close at $19.90. Agnico-Eagle Mines also lost ground — despite recent opening ceremonies at its Goldex mine in the Abitibi region of northwestern Quebec. Agnico fell $4.28 to $72.21. Goldex, the company’s second producing mine, has about 23.1 million tonnes of proven and probable reserves grading 2.2 grams gold per tonne for a total of more than 1.6 million oz. gold.

Meanwhile, Barrick Gold fell $1.55 to $45.06, Goldcorp lost $2.04 to close at $44.97 and Kinross Gold was down $1.51 to $22.59. Yamana Gold fell $1.53 to $15.43.

News on July 4 that FNX Mininghad signed a landmark “mutual benefits agreement” with the Wahnapitae First Nation on how to collaborate during the life of the company’s Podolsky mine was not enough to buoy the company’s stock price. FNX was down $3.30 during the trading session to $20.80. The agreement paves the way for members of the community to participate with FNX in employment, business, education and training opportunities as well as environmental management, FNX said in a press release.

On other fronts, Uranerz Energy was down 54.5% or $3.52 to $2.95 on no news, while Uranium One was down 48 to $4.32 — despite signing a credit agreement on July 2 with the Bank of Montreal and the Bank of Nova Scotia to borrow up to US$100 million. The senior secured revolving credit facility is for a two-year term and can be extended for a further year. The money can be used for working capital requirements, capital spending and acquisitions.

One of the few bright spots was Petaquilla Copper, which was up 89, or 84.7%, to $1.94 on news of a takeover announced. On July 6, Inmet Mining announced a $345-million bid for its joint-venture partner. Petaquilla Copper holds a 52% stake in Minera Petaquilla, which is developing the large Petaquilla copper project in Panama; Inmet owns the remaining 48% interest. Teck Cominco is also involved with the project, although its position has been disputed by Petaquilla. The all-cash offer of $2 per share is a 108% premium to Petaquilla Copper’s closing price on July 4.
