The TSX was down slightly during the June 10-16 trading session, declining 16 points, or 0.1%, to 14,944. The oil price again took centre stage. Finance ministers from the G-8 countries gathered in Japan, with one of the items on the agenda being the impact of record oil prices on a slowing global economy. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia was reportedly preparing to boost production in order to lower oil prices, and Bloomberg news service reported that the Saudi oil minister has called a meeting of oil producer and consumer countries to discuss the high prices, which he calls “unjustified.”
Among volume leaders, mid-tier uranium miner Uranium One lost 20 to $4.40. In May, the company reported its first-quarter results, with revenues of US$22.5 million and a net loss of US$115 million. The company’s principal operations are in South Africa and Kazakhstan, with uranium assets in the U. S. and exploration projects in Canada.
Eastern Platinum also traded heavily, dropping 9 to $2.46. The company recently reported first-quarter results showing net earnings of almost $20 million on revenues of $56 million. The company mines platinum group metals in South Africa.
Harry Winston Diamond advanced $2.08 to$29.83.On June 4, the diamond miner and “jeweller to the stars” also reported financial results for the quarter, with net earnings of $21 million on revenues of $156 million. Evidently, fears of a U. S. slowdown negatively affecting Harry Winston’s results were unfounded, as both figures were an improvement over the same period last year. Besides its jewelry retail interests, the company owns 40% of the Diavik diamond mine, in the Northwest Territories.
Ivernia, owner of the Magellan lead mine in Western Australia, fell 25% to 83. Mine operations were suspended in April 2007 due to concerns of lead leaking from its transport containers. Resumption of mining is pending final regulatory approval for sealed shipments of lead concentrate through the port of Freemantle.
Imperial Metals added 15 to $8.60 over the week. The Federal Court of Appeal has confirmed the federal environmental assessment of Imperial’s Red Chris copper-gold project, which was deemed “unlikely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.”
Equinox Minerals dropped 26 to $4.32 during the session. The company issued an updated resource for its Lumwana copper and uranium project, in Zambia.
Silvercorp Metals continued to fall, losing $1.07 to close at $6.50. It was trading above $10 in March. The company recently released first-quarter net earnings of US$60 million on revenues of US$108 million. Silvercorp recently acquired privately held Yangtze Mining.
Shore Gold dropped 11 to $3.09 as it issued a resource estimate for its Star kimberlite project in Saskatchewan.
