Vale launches recruiting initiative

Brazilian mining giant Vale (RIO-N) has announced two new training programs to bolster its ranks and give recently graduated mining students experience on the world stage.

The programs — one geared toward grads seeking management positions and the other for those with a technical orientation — are aimed at students who have been out of school for two to three years.

The industrial training program requires a one-year commitment and includes a trip to visit Vale’s Brazilian operations, followed by a training session in mining held in partnership with a local Brazilian university and seven months of hands-on experience at the site.

Candidates must be fluent in English and have a university degree in engineering, geology, chemistry or geophysics.

The program is open to students of all nationalities with the exception of Brazilians, since there’s a specific program devoted to students from Vale’s home country.

The global corporate development program, meanwhile, aims to prepare grads for a career in management.

“Different from other programs that focus on a technical career, the global trainee was conceived specifically to train the future leaders of our company,” said Hanna Meireles, international recruitment manager at Vale, in a press release.

Trainees will devote three years to the program, beginning with travelling to Brazil to participate in mining- related workshops, then receiving job experience in their home countries. During the second year, students will exchange places with a Vale trainee from a different country in order to gain global experience.

The third year will have the students return to their home countries for business training in their area of expertise.

Both programs begin in 2009, with applications for the industrial training program accepted from Aug. 1 to Sept. 1 and applications for the global corporate development program accepted between July 21 and Aug. 21.
