The TSX Composite Index recovered from a mid-week slump and finished the April 10-16 trading period up 177.65 points at 13,659.98.
The initial slump was blamed on indications the U.S. Federal Reserve may raise interest rates to control inflation and a revised International Monetary Fund (IMF) forecast that lowered its U.S. growth estimate for 2007 to 2.2% from 2.9%.
But the Canadian dollar rose after stronger-than-expected retail sales in the U.S. signalled that the U.S. economy may not be slowing after all — which would mean no interest rate changes in Canada.
The index was further spurred by gains in the telecommunications and energy sector, combined with continued high commodity prices. The net effect was the composite touching yet another all-time high.
With the price of gold gaining almost US$10 to US$686.50 per oz., the Global Gold Index gained 5.6 points to 323.83.
The Capped Metals & Mining Index also did well, growing 18.65 points to 750.44 as copper and tin prices continued to climb, while record nickel and zinc prices fell off some.
A busy week on the acquisition front for Lundin Mining made it the period’s most popular miner with over 42 million shares traded. The company finished the period flat at $15.34.
Lundin has recently made friendly takeover offers for both Rio Narcea Gold Mines and Tenke Mining. Rio Narcea was up 16 on the week at $5.26 on trading volume of 26 million shares, while Tenke climbed $6.22 to $26.24 on roughly 32 million shares traded.
Breakwater Resources and Equinox Minerals rounded out the top-three most active with 40 million and 38 million shares traded, respectively.
The period’s biggest gainer was Canadian Gold Hunter. Shares in the Vancouver-based company had been on a steady climb since April 10 despite no news, and then accelerated further after an April 16 announcement that the company was acquiring Almaden Minerals and its 70% interest in the Caballo Blanco gold property in Veracruz state, Mexico. Drilling at the site has intersected 108 metres grading 1.14 grams gold per tonne, 92.7 metres of 1 gram gold and 76 metres of 1.7 grams gold. In all, Gold Hunter shares climbed 81% during the period to $1.96.
Robert McEwen’s U.S. Gold made the next biggest gains after announcing strong results from its Tonkin project on Nevada’s Cortez trend. Results included 25 grams gold per tonne over 1.5 metres within a larger interval of 3.3 grams gold over 18 metres. The news sent U.S. Gold shares up nearly 54% to $7.63.
Other winners for the period were Rubicon Minerals, up 49% to $2.82, Grande Cache Coal, up 46% to 71, and Tiomin Resources, which, on no news, gained 42% to close at 17 on trading volume of 36 million shares.
On the downside were Carlisle Goldfields, which lost 18% to 30 on no news and Cancor Mines, which fell after issuing a press release on its exploration and development activities that failed to report and specific significant results. Cancor is focused on exploration projects in Quebec. Its shares fell nearly 17% to 30 for the period.
